Keeping Your Family Safe (And SANE) During A Kitchen Renovation

Are you thinking of renovating your kitchen? How exciting, and perhaps terrifying at the same time – especially if you have kids!

Between trying to prepare meals, wash dishes and run a household, when the kitchen is out of action for a period of time because of a renovation, it can be tricky maintaining a sense of normalcy and even sanity in the home. There are ways to make it work though, and it may be easier than you think!

Here are our top five tips, for keeping your family safe (and SANE) during a kitchen renovation:

Designate a makeshift kitchen:

This may include a microwave, toaster, kettle and camping stove. Let’s face it, you’re not going to be able to create gourmet banquets during your kitchen renovation, but if the necessary items are set up and ready to go, basic meals will be a synch. You’d be amazed by how many delicious, nutritional meals can be cooked in a simple microwave. Perhaps now’s the perfect opportunity to give it a try!

Create a play space:

Young children may be enamoured by watching the changes happening in their kitchen. Perhaps create a play space where they are safely restricted from entering the work area but have a clear view of what’s going on. Baby gates are a fantastic option in this situation. Perhaps provide toddlers with toy hammers, shifters and even a hard hat – maybe they’ll enjoy doing some ‘renos’ of their own!

Simplify:

Now is not the time to have high expectations of the meals you will prepare and low waste and household garbage levels. Washing dishes is probably going to be difficult during a kitchen renovation so this is the perfect opportunity to make use of all those leftover paper plates, cups and cutlery hanging around your house. While using disposable plates, bowls and cutlery isn’t a good idea in the long run, during a kitchen renovation, they may just be the difference between maintaining your sanity and, well – not.

Have a back-up plan:

If all fails, perhaps it’s time to invite yourself over to a friend’s place for dinner. The change of scenery and use of a fully functional kitchen will make all the difference! Perhaps offer to order some pizzas and bring them round to share. Or even offer to cook – in their kitchen. Afterall, you’re likely to have ingredients in your fridge which need using up, you just need the kitchen! It’s a win-win situation!

Hire a family-friendly company:

Perhaps the most important thing you can do for your family is to hire a family-friendly company to complete your kitchen renovation. Wonderful Kitchens is a family owned and operated company and we’re passionate about making sure your family not only enjoys their newly renovated kitchen, but that everyone stays safe (and sane!) throughout the renovation process.
