Your sink probably isn’t the most exciting part of your kitchen, but it’s quite arguably one of the most important. Like it or not, the dishes must be done, so you may as well have a sink that you like to use! Maybe you’ve never taken a great deal of notice of different sinks, but believe us, there’s a wide range of styles and materials out there to choose from. And, as we know, today’s elegant, top-quality kitchens are a combination of practical and beautiful features…right down to the sink.
The sink is the unsung workhorse of an efficient and practical kitchen. With this in mind, it’s important that you take the time to work out exactly what you need for your new kitchen: single bowl; double bowl; stainless steel; ceramic; composite… the list of options goes on…
The stainless-steel sink, without doubt, remains the most popular choice for the domestic kitchen across Australia. It’s functional, stylish, hard-wearing and super easy to clean. Although it is possible for them to dent, they have great scratch, stain and heat resistance and are relatively inexpensive. Stainless steel sinks are available in a wide range of sizes, and with proper care they won’t rust or corrode.
Traditional, beautiful and popular in both modern and classic style kitchens, ceramic sinks are a long-standing favorite. The solid, timeless quality of a ceramic sink isn’t something you can hide: it has a certain feel to it that’s simply unmistakable. Ceramic has excellent heat and cold resistance, though it is possible for it to be chipped and scratched, so due care must be taken when washing large, heavy or sharp items.
As the name suggests, composite sinks are made from a mixture of materials and designed to mimic natural granite (but without busting the budget). They look great, are easy to install, have great heat and scratch resistance, and are easy to clean.
Are kitchen sinks a standard size? The short answer is no. The size of your sink is going to be dependent on these three factors:
- the amount of available bench space
- the size of your budget
- the needs of your family/household
Single or Double Bowl?
The single bowl sink with either a single or double drainer is a common choice in many of today’s kitchens. They offer adequate room to wash and dry dishes, without taking up too much valuable bench space.
A double sink (or even a ‘sink and a half’) allows for more volume and offers greater flexibility: one sink can be used for rinsing and the other for washing. Of course, they do take up a bit more space, however, if yours is a family one, a double sink is probably your most practical option.
The name says it all: under-mount sinks are simply sinks mounted below the benchtop level. They are space efficient, modern and add that subtle hint of class to your kitchen, however, they generally don’t have an attached drainer section.
