If there’s one piece of advice that we as professionals can give you, it’s this: don’t underestimate the importance of your kitchen layout. In fact, we believe that kitchen layout is one of the most important areas of design. Regardless of the color, style or the quality of the appliances, if the layout just doesn’t work, the kitchen is bound to be a disappointment.
Today’s kitchen has become the central hub of the home. Whether it’s cooking, eating family meals, entertaining or just relaxing, the kitchen is the place we seem to end up. However,
many of us are all too familiar with the pantry that’s too small, the drawers that can’t be opened when the dishwasher door is down, the kitchen with island benches that create a bottleneck because there isn’t enough space between them and the fridge… Many homeowners have similar complaints, and all of these annoyances are due to poor or impractical kitchen layout.
If you are building a new home, it’s wise to give the kitchen layout more than its share of attention. Although you may have basic limitations, starting from scratch gives you the opportunity to adjust the basic design elements of your kitchen to suit your specific needs. Consider flow and efficiency, especially if there’s likely to be more than one person working in it at a time. Maximize storage, minimize waste space and concentrate on functionality and practicality.
Undertaking a kitchen remodel? This is not only a time to update: it’s a time to make better. Obviously, the shape and size of your kitchen are going to be determined by existing factors (walls, doorways, windows etc) however, you can enhance the functionality of your kitchen by improving the layout. If you’ve lived in the house for a while, you’ll probably have a list of gripes about the kitchen – spend time planning your new one and focus on eliminating those issues.
Kitchen layout is never more important than in the commercial setting. Restaurants and cafe kitchens seem to have an unavoidable stress factor that can be greatly reduced by efficient kitchen layout. When timing is crucial, it’s ever-so-important to have streamlined production, which means practical and efficient work spaces.
Before you put pencil to paper to start planning your new kitchen, take time to do your research. Browse magazines, look online and visit showrooms to get a feel for how different layouts would work for you. Don’t be afraid to ask family and friends for their comments on different ideas – after all, you want everyone to feel comfortable and at home in your new kitchen!
